Launch of new Taiwan passport set for January 2021

IATA, foreign governments, immigration services to be informed 2 months ahead of introduction

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The new passport that gives a prominent place to the name “Taiwan” and reduces the size of the term “Republic of China” will become available to the public in Jan. 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) announced Tuesday (Sept. 29).The new design has been introduced due to difficulties arising when Taiwanese citizens presented the current passport at immigration checkpoints overseas. The words “Republic of China” frequently gave rise to misunderstandings, with Taiwanese citizens being mistaken for citizens of the People’s Republic of China.

MOFA staff at Taiwanese representative offices around the world will contact local authorities to inform them of the changes in order to prevent any misunderstandings, Yeh said.
